It was quite difficult in the beginning to think about something which can disrupt the market and the vision of 2050. Honestly speaking, I am not good when you time-bound me and made me think about a creative idea. For me, it's about watching something and then thinking about what I could do to make it better or reading something and the idea struck, I could do this in that product, and it will be better. So, this activity is quite challenging, but I have a habit of recording my ideas or question for a problem in my notebook. While I was going through it, something struck like lightning What makes it difficult to deal with Covid-19? During the lockdown, it was heartbreaking to see millions of people dying and suffering. Watching people lose their loved ones struck hard than I thought it would. So during Covid, I started researching why it is taking that long to treat it and difficult to make the vaccine. Therefore, I have learned about it and the history of other pandemics, and I was able to comprehend the basic knowledge.
Remembering all about it is a breakthrough in my quest to find my problem statement. After that, the question was what will be the answer or solution? Not coming from a biology background, a little difficult but not impossible. The concept of biomimicry was there in the subconscious. Learning about the other examples of innovation as inspiration from nature is quite enlightening learning. Nature has always given answers to our problems, so keeping that hope in mind, I was trying to find the answer. Then something came to my mind that I have read ages ago. The ability of sharks' innate immune system to fight viruses and other known diseases.
Another breakthrough and I started my research and answer my primary question "What makes their immune system powerful at that kind of level?" In the Beginning, it was quite difficult to learn as the articles, journals, and book chapters uses quite a difficult technical vocabulary. This was a problem because if I don't get the basics clear, it would be difficult to present. To tackle it, I found a real interest podcast show to understand the basic terms of the whole, microorganism concept. I started navigating the solution.
Another challenge was to summarise the vast information and cover every important part. It took time for me to achieve it. A lot of editing, addition, and subtraction of concepts to give a clear picture of my product. I have to say, it is quite challenging and art to present adequate information on the presentation and talk about it within a given period. I still have a long way to go to master this art, although this unit has given me a platform to work on my weaknesses and move toward a new and better approach to life.
I think the choice to disrupt medical science is an unconscious effort to get out of my comfort zone as I have talked about in the class. I might not be at my best, but I think it is just the beginning for me, and a long way to go. The whole recording process took me a long time and a lot of tries. I am not comfortable with the camera and it kind of makes me conscious, so I think it was really difficult for me to overcome this hurdle.
I would say, this exercise is an experience of learning beyond boundaries. Stretching my mental boundaries to grow out of a conservative mindset and learn something that I never thought about learning. Once I was listening to Elon Musk and when he was asked about how he started thinking about exploring space, he said that he learned about it from books, his amazing team, and some of the experts from the field. In my quest of finding the solution, I not only find myself learning about the medical field but getting attached to the idea of biomimicry, mutation, and Genetical Engineering. From my experience, I certainly agree with Elon Musk about his learning process. I have never thought I would be able to immerse myself in any other field than data, accounting, and finance. Surprisingly, this immersion was a new experience and a road I look forward to exploring more.
At the end I would like to quote, David Ickle "Life constantly presents the greatest opportunity brilliantly disguised as the biggest disaster". This was a disaster for me when I was sure I would fail but at the end of the day, the realization of this being a great opportunity to accept the imperfection in my work is quite something I would take with me beyond the corporate world.
