Reflecting on the Future: Shaping Legacy, Sustainability, and Biomimicry

I am not the kind of person who consciously worries about what will happen in the distant future. The future is an uncertain concept. However, this session serves as a reminder that the future is not solely determined by what will happen in the times to come, but rather by the reactions and actions of the present. This made me contemplate the legacy I am proud of, given to me by my hardworking forefathers who fought for their dreams. Yet, a lingering question arose: What about me? As a leader, what do I want to give not only to my family but also to the future world? Another question emerged: What about mother nature? Will I pass on the beautiful environment I enjoyed as a child or leave behind a degraded one? This question weighs heavily on my soul. It is often said that when we don't consciously think about something, we may not truly care about it. However, the realization of this truth can be burdensome. Personally, this discussion has deeply impacted me, and its serious implications have motivated me to make small changes in my behavior that can help preserve nature, such as properly disposing of cardboard and being mindful of purchasing products that contribute to sustainability.

Before this session, I was unaware of the 17 sustainable development goals, which served as the initial step toward shifting my perspective. Understanding them as a paradigm was both fascinating and easy for me to comprehend. One particularly intriguing aspect discussed was how companies tend to prioritize their own preferences rather than focusing on foundational goals. For instance, I learned about Apple's decision not to include chargers with their products in the name of sustainability, yet they still charge a similar price for their offerings. In class, we discussed how Europe is considering implementing a universal charger concept to reduce the opportunity cost associated with producing chargers for different products. Further investigation revealed that India is also looking forward to adopting this concept. Such market changes can be disruptive in the electronics industry, and being aware of these possibilities assists me in analyzing policy changes. As an analyst, I can potentially undertake a project to assess the overall impact on the industry.

Biomimicry was a new concept to me before this session, but learning about it has proven to be quite fruitful. It has made me reflect on various examples that I had never paid attention to before, such as the similarities in design between airplanes and birds. As Vesna mentioned, learning from nature is a wonderful idea, given that it existed long before we did. I believe this realization can benefit me in the field of product design or serve as an asset and advantage as a leader. I can always assist my future team in making improvements by applying principles inspired by nature.

At the end, It is time to approach the concept of identification and implementation of corrective techniques to improve our performance report of healing mother nature simultaneously to protect our future and rise above our self-centered natures.
